Wallet gizmos

I'm a total sucker for credit-card-sized gizmos, and
Touch of Ginger has a whole bunch of really cool ones (as well as a lot of other neat stuff). Currently I'm coveting one of these, and my mom just gave me a credit-card-sized ice scraper.

The most important human being on Earth

For absolutely no good reason, my answers to the Inside the Actor's Studio questionnaire:
What is your favorite word? Wonder.
What is your least favorite word? Can't.
What turns you on? Learning.
What turns you off? Willful ignorance, like people who seem proud that they are too busy to read.
What sound do you love? First thing in the morning after a heavy snowfall: It isn't silent, but it is quiet, and the sounds of the world are wonderfully muffled.
What sound do you hate? Barking dogs.
What is your favorite curse word? Dumbass.
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt? Police detective.
What profession would you not like to attempt? Butcher.
If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive? See, what matters is who you are, not what you believe.

Power vs. simplicity

I'm in the midst of switching from DishPVR to Tivo. The difference between these two is a perfect illustration of the classic tension between power and simplicity. Tivo has many features that DishPVR lacks, but DishPVR is so much easier to use.

In related Tivo news, I've been watching a lot of old X-Files lately. I still like that show a lot, even after all these years, and there are a lot of episodes I've never seen. I remember noticing when that show was new that it was the first show in which I'd seen pervasive use of cellphones. Now, of course, what leaps out at me is that those cellphones are huge!

Memo to Myself

Wired says the Cambridge Soundworks 740 is better than the Bose Wave. (It also comes in black.)

Don't Walk

WP: A report finds that in the U.S., walking is far more dangerous than driving, with a fatality rate per miles traveled over 15 times higher. This report just puts numbers to the obvious fact that our pedestrian infrastructure very badly sucks. For example, the subway system is (probably) going to be extended to Dulles Airport. The nearest stop will then be precisely two miles from my house. However, it will be impossible for me to safely walk or bicycle there, as doing so would require walking on the shoulder of, or biking on, a 55mph, six-lane road.
