In October 1999, my company signed up with
Rhythms to install a DSL line. Ten months later, in August 2000, I moved, without ever having had a working DSL line. In the interim, there were many amazing snafus on Rhythms's part, including installing a fully operational DSL line at the wrong house! They are truly the second-lamest company I've ever dealt with (Cellular One is first). Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, they had the audacity to call my company's IT guy and tell him we owed them $930 for a DSL installation. I'm sure that guy hadn't read my account history, or else he would've sent the bill by mail and spared himself the well-deserved earful our IT guy gave him, about asking for $930 for installing a DSL line that, despite annoying and frustrating me for ten months, never passed a single byte of data! I can only shake my head in disbelief.

A while ago I followed some banner ad to a photo contest. I submitted one of my favorites from my portfolio, and subsequently realized that this is a vanity publisher; you submit your picture(s), and then they try to sell you a $70 book of photography that contains your photo. Nonetheless, there are a lot of really amazing photos there.

After installing the most excellent Google toolbar, I discovered a rather amusing form of ego-surfing. Go to your own home page. Ask Google for pages similar to it. Try to figure out why it thinks they're similar. In some cases it's pretty obvious; for example, Charlotte Geary and I both mention on our sites that we are UVa alumni, live in D.C., are photographers, and like to travel. Others I'm totally mystified as to how they're similar; perhaps I just didn't find the similar parts of those sites.

I'm not sure I really expect anyone to read it, but anyway I've started writing down my wish list for Personal Information Manager (PIM), e.g. Palm, features.
