I had almost forgotten this blog existed... I no longer post to it, as posts like these now go to a different blog, Inseparable.

"You know how Mozart songs have their own feeling built in?"

Wednesday, September 03, 2003

We have a Fisher-Price "Little People" toy that plays an extremely annoying theme song: "We're little people..." Megan had a friend over today, and we heard her explaining that this song was "like the national anthem for the little people."

Megan goes around the house hunting for scotch tape. She finds some (the dispenser of which happens to be broken), and then holds it up in the air and cries out, "EVIDENCE!" I have no idea why, but it was hilarious.

Megan and I are sitting in the family room. I'm reading the newspaper. Megan goes and gets her markers and paper, sits down at the coffee table, and says to me, "Daddy, I'm an artist. Please try to be quiet."

We put a bunch of glow-in-the-dark star stickers on Megan's ceiling. As we were putting her to bed, she found a couple in the bed that had apparently not been sticky enough, and had fallen off the ceiling and into her bed. She said, "Look, Daddy -- meteorites!"

One of Megan's recent snack discoveries is Fruit by the Foot. This is a big long roll of fruit leather. Being unfamiliar with the phrase "by the foot," or even with "foot" as a unit of distance, she theorized that the name was because if you unroll the whole thing and let it hang down, it hangs all the way down "by your foot." Thus: "fruit by your foot."

Cathy took Megan to see Snow White on Ice the other night. During the part where the prince comes, Cathy thought she'd be a good feminist and explained to Megan that she didn't need a prince or any other man to take care of her. She replied, "No, I already have my Daddy." Isn't that just the sweetest thing ever?

We're wrapping Christmas presents, Christmas music on the stereo, and Megan is flitting around the house pretending to be an angel. As I get her undressed and into her pajamas, she asks me to take off her socks. I ask if she wants them off because her feet are hot, and she says, "No, it's because angels don't wear socks or shoes. Angels have bare feet."

Cathy is leaving today to go to Texas for a week. We told Megan about this last night, and after asking a few questions and pausing to think about it a bit, she said to Cathy, "I'll be dreaming of you." Brought tears to our eyes!

Cathy: "Megan, would you like biscuits or crescent rolls?"
Megan: "Crescent rolls. (long pause.) What are crescent rolls?"
She cracks me up. Ultimately, after examining the packages, she chose biscuits.

Megan spent the night at her aunt's house a few nights ago. Her room at home contains a digital clock, and there's always a discussion in the morning of what time she woke up. So, when Cathy picked her up from her aunt's, whose guest bedroom contains a regular analog clock, and asked her when she woke up, she said, "I don't know, her clock only has pointy numbers on it."

Meganism du jour: "A good friend is someone who knows where the band-aids are."

Wednesday, August 09, 2000

When Megan reads the time on a digital clock, she gets 2 and 5 (which, of course, are mirror images of one another on a seven-segment LED) mixed up. She knows this, so when she reads, say, the time 3:56, she'll say, "three, two-or-five, six".

Yesterday when she woke up, she told me, "I slept until the clouds were white." I found that very poetic.

About a year ago, we taught Megan to play "Go Fish" with a deck of cards specifically for that game; they depicted fish and various other sea creatures. Some time later, I showed her how to play with a regular deck of cards. When it came time to say "Go Fish," she told me, "No, Daddy, when you play with these cards you have to say 'Go Numbers.'"

I'm travelling, and I had the following phone conversation with Megan:
Me: What are you doing?
Megan: Mommy is getting me a band-aid because I got a bad boo-boo at school.
Me: Where?
Megan: On a chair.
I think she's seen too much Groucho Marx or something.

She draws three pictures and puts pawprint stickers on them a la Blue's Clues. Then she asks me to figure out the clues. The clues are: the sea, a boat, and a tomato. I puzzle over this for a while, and finally I give up. She says, "It's sailing!" I say, okay, I understand that the sea and a boat make sailing, but what's the tomato for? She replies, in a tone of voice that seems to imply that I'm not too bright, "That's your snack while you're sailing!" Of course. [March 2000]

Cathy lets Megan choose which dress she will wear today, a red one or a blue one. She chooses, and then I walk into the room and ask her which one she chose. She replies, "I clicked on the red one." [February 2000]

We are babysitting Megan's cousin Jordan, who is a baby at the time. She is crying, as babies are wont to do. Megan asks why Jordan is crying, and I tell her that Jordan is a baby, and crying is just something that babies do. I ask her if she thinks she used to cry when she was a baby. She replies, "No, I'm too happy to cry." [Early 1999]
