An article a few days ago on MSN (which I can no longer seem to find) verified what I already suspected: Even if you live in a state with a great tax rebate program, it takes about five years for owning a hybrid-fuel car to be cheaper than owning an equivalent pure-gas car. If you live where there are no rebates, forget it; it'll never pay off. While owning a hybrid has other advantages (in some states, you can ride alone in the carpool lane), the economics are going to have to improve further, probably by means of making a large federal tax rebate. The situation is even worse for all-electric cars; my family would be ideal candidates for an electric car, but none of the major manufacturers sell one, and those you can buy are exorbitantly expensive.
